A new climate change movement dubbed the Extinction Rebellion has taken to the streets of London over the last week in order to protest for more action to be taken to reduce carbon emissions and promote awareness of climate change. Global Warming is a problem that effects us all and more and more people are starting to realise that they can do their bit to help tackle this global issue.
Last night BBC One aired a thought provoking programme where Sir David Attenborough looked at the science of climate change and potential solutions to this global threat. In the programme we learned that on average a single person has an astonishingly high yearly carbon footprint of 13 tonnes, which can be traced back down the supply chain. Every purchase, every action has an effect on the environment. Here at Byoot we want to help spread the word and discuss the ways that we as individuals can reduce their carbon footprint by at least 2 tonnes just by making some small changes to our every day lives.
Make Your Property As Energy Efficient As Possible…
There are many ways to increase the energy efficiency of your home, from simply starting a compost pile, or by making sure that you are using eco-friendly light bulbs, to insuring that your home is properly insulated and that your appliances such as your dishwasher, fridge and even your boiler all have a good efficiency rating. Not only will you be reducing your carbon footprint you will also be saving money on your energy bills.
Buy Less But Better Quality…
As a society we are extremely wasteful and many products we use end up in landfills or in the ocean, leaking harmful chemicals into our ecosystem. As individuals we can do our bit to reduce the frequency and therefore quantity of our waste. Last nights TV programme highlighted how every product especially large appliances such as washing machines have an enormous carbon footprint so whilst we might not realise it the single use or ‘in fashion’ culture of replacing something as soon as we want to is harming the environment. By purchasing quality products and taking care of them, we as individuals can dramatically reduce our carbon footprint.
Eat Everything We Buy…
As previously said we have become a very wasteful society, close to a third of the world’s food production is wasted each year. In order to reduce your individual carbon footprint it is important to only buy what you can eat. It can be very tempting to over estimate how much you need but by making sure you eat everything you buy you can dramatically reduce your carbon footprint.
Reduce Meat & Diary Consumption…
Cutting down on dairy and meat, especially beef & lamb can make a huge difference to the environment. Cows and Sheep produce large quantities of methane which is a toxic gas which accelerates global warming much faster than carbon dioxide, Its impact is estimated at 34 times greater than CO2 over a 100 year period.
In summary small things can make a big difference and we all have a responsibility to try and do our bit to protect our planet from the effects of global warming. These four things will help to reduce your carbon footprint and can even save you money.
